24 Crochet Hats Book Review

Friday, March 11, 2022

Hi I’m Blanche of @beeoutrageous.com here to review “24 Crochet Hats” by Kristin Omdahl.

Let me just say on the outset, that I am truly a KO Fan Her heart warming story of providing an income for herself and her son by creating her business. And her enthusiastic presence on social platforms (Instagram, Facebook, her You Tube Channel) and appearances on The TV Program “Knit and Crochet Today” make her an inspiring leader in our industry.

This ebook doesn’t disappoint. It serves up hats to grace the heads of men, women ,children and infants. Many sizes are provided for each. Not only are there 24 easy to follow written patterns, but there are sections on:

How to read patterns
How to measure gauge
How to weave in ends
Various ways to block your work
Yarn substitutions
Size tables
Glossary
Crochet Hook Sizes

All of the above make this a veritable one stop resource for creating crochet hats. Each hat utilizes different crochet stitches , techniques and yarns. The video tutorials for the patterns of “24 Crochet Hats”are provided on Kristin’s You Tube Channel.

My favorite hat is Kendra. Perhaps, it’s the color of the yarn that intrigued me (bubble gum pink) or because the stitches are created with Broomstick Lace and a Cabled brim. But that being said, this hat is a stunner.

I would be remiss if I didn’t include a mention of Kristin’s Fund Project Kristin. A portion of every sale goes to help survivors of domestic abuse. I hope this review will encourage you (if you don’t already) to follow her account www.Kristinomdahl.com where you can buy her ebook , purchase her yarns, and crochet accessories.

Book Review - Crochet in a Day

Title: Crochet in a Day
Author: Salena Baca, with Danyel Pink and Emily Truman
MSRP: $24.95 USD

Book review by Pia Thadani - Stitches n Scraps

I received a free review copy of Crochet in a Day from Stackpole Books. Although I accept free products for review, I do not guarantee a positive review. My reviews are based entirely on my honest opinions. All images of copyrighted material are used with permission.

Do you like crochet projects that work up quickly? Get your quick crochet fix from Crochet in a Day!

Salena Baca is the author of My Crocheted Closet, which I had reviewed some time ago.  In Crochet in a Day, she joins forces with two other talented designers, Danyel Pink, and Emily Truman, to bring you a whopping 42 projects. All of the projects are designed to work up in a day or less.

The first half of the book focuses on wearables. There are hats, headbands, shawls, mitts, and more. There's even a cute pair of slipper socks.

One of my favorite designs in the book is this Dreamy Poncho. It's a simple pattern that really does work up quickly, but looks so lovely, lacy and elegant that it looks like it took forever.

The last half of the book focuses on home decor, featuring washcloths, baskets, table linens, and other decorative items. This hanging herb holder is reminiscent of classic macrame plant holders, and would brighten up any kitchen.

I also love the chunky, Fast Track Basket. One can never have enough baskets. Of course, the only logical thing to fill a yarn basket with is...more yarn!

There are so many more beautiful patterns in this book than I can show you here. If you're a crocheter who likes to have a finished object every time you sit down to crochet, this is the book for you.

You can enter to win your own copy of Crochet in a Day! This prize is generously provided by the publisher, Stackpole Books. To be eligible, you must be 18 years of age or older, with a valid shipping address in the US. Book Review - Crocheted Hoods & Cowls

Friday, December 14, 2018

Title: Crocheted Hoods & Cowls
Author: Tammy Flores
MSRP: $24.95USD

Book review by Pia Thadani - Stitches n Scraps

I received a free review copy of Crocheted Hoods & Cowls from Stackpole Books. Although I accept free products for review, I do not guarantee a positive review. My reviews are based entirely on my honest opinions. All images of copyrighted material are used with permission.

Keep warm through the winter with these Crocheted Hoods and Cowls! From adorable critters hoods for kids to stylish adult accessories, there's something in this book for everyone!

The patterns that caught my eye first were the hoods for kids. There are 7 different animals, including a kitty and a giraffe, and even a dinosaur. I think the dinosaur could be a dragon too - what do you think?

For adults, there are 20 beautiful patterns featuring rich textures, from subtle to bold and chunky. The book says these are intended for women, but most of them seem pretty gender neutral to me. For example, I could see a guy looking handsome in this Linen Stitch Hood.

Among the patterns are hoods, hooded cowls, and hooded scarves. Hooded scarves are my favorite because they can be worn in different ways. If I'm really cold, I like to tie the scarf ends and shove them down into my jacket for an extra layer of warmth.

If it's just a bit chilly, I'll let the ends hang free. This herringbone hooded scarf would be perfect for that, and they made it even better by adding pockets!

You can enter to win your own copy of Crocheted Hoods & Cowls! This prize is generously provided by the publisher, Stackpole Books. To be eligible, you must be 18 years of age or older, with a valid shipping address in the US. The winner will be contacted by email and must reply to that email and provide the shipping address within 1 week in order to receive the prize. If the winner does not reply within 1 week, a new winner will be selected.

Review

These blankets that Christine designed are a more practical version of the sea life blankets, but I’m all about things that will get a lot of use, so these are great!

There are written instructions and graphs for each pattern. The booklet includes all your general pattern info (gauge, terms, abbreviations), a photo tutorial for the border, as well as a list of yarns that were used for each project. Book Review - Sportacular Afghans

Thursday, February 15, 2018

I've heard it so many times in the past few years - there aren't enough crochet patterns for men! While While this book isn't only for men, it will solve the problem of wanting something special to make for him - especially if you have a sports fan in your life!

Sportacular Afghans

Publisher: Leisure Arts

Author: Karen Barnes

Number of Pages: 48 pages

Number of Projects: 5 patterns

Types of Projects: Sports afghans

Difficulty Ratings: All patterns are listed as easy.

Yarn Used: #0, #3, and #4

First Impression: These projects will make great gifts for men that love sports!

My Favorite Project Pick: I always pick a favorite project when I do book reviews, but that was really hard this time. Mine & hubby's favorite sport isn't in the book, so I'm going to have to say the Poker Table is probably my favorite because of all the details included on it.

The details on the chips and cards on the poker table is amazing! But Karen put a lot of thought and attention into the detail of all of them, not just the poker table.

Review

All the blankets are listed as easy. You will need to know basic stitches, with basic increasing and decreasing knowledge. The decrease stitching is in the stitch guide section of each pattern to make it easier.

The booklet also includes all your general pattern info (gauge, terms, abbreviations), as well as exactly which yarns were used for each project. There are a few photo tutorials in the back for anything that is not a "normal" to a crochet pattern.

So Creative!

There are 5 patterns in the book, but there is so much attention to detail that you won't be dissapointed. Each project has an afghan base with crocheted pieces that are sewn onto the top. This is perfect for working on the afghan at home and taking the smaller pieces to the projects with you.

Happy Crocheting!

Book Review & Giveaway ~Twinkie Chan's Crocheted Abode A La Mode: 20 Yummy Crochet Projects for Your Home~

Friday, April 15, 2016

Hi, everyone!  I'm going off schedule to bust in here and offer up something really special to you!   I am fairly certain you have already heard of Twinkie Chan, but if not, get ready!  She is a fun and inspiring crochet designer, and you're going to have a chance to win a copy of her latest book not only here, but on two other crochet blogs!

All images in this post are property of Twinkie Chan and are used with permission.

For the uninitiated, Twinkie Chan is a creative mogul with plenty of crochet activities - including a popular blog and YouTube channel, two books, a series on Creative Bug, and collaborations with some of our favorite publications and companies!  Recently, I've seen her lemon stress ball pattern prominently featured to help us weather tax season.  The free pattern was a result of a collab with the Craft Yarn Council. Without a doubt, Twinkie Chan is a crochet powerhouse, and I've been fangirling over her since 2010.

As I wrote on Crochet Spot, "Twinkie Chan’s Crocheted Abode A La Mode ~ 20 Yummy Crochet Projects for Your Home  is chock-full of joyful, exuberant, delicious, crochet fun."  Paging through the book is like shopping at your favorite, specialty supermarket for all of the best things to eat.  My enthusiasm for this book is BIG, and we're lucky that the publisher is allowing me to give away not one, but three copies!  I'm giving one away here on CGOA Now, and two on other blogs. Read to the bottom for full giveaway details.

If you are like me, you'll want to crochet everything in the book.  The only problem is where to start.  This book will inspire you to dress your home in new and interesting ways using crochet.  I decided to begin with the Allsorts Licorice Afghan.  It's not because I love that candy.  In fact, I don't really like licorice.  It's because I loved the simple, bold, graphic design.  Instead of dropping everything and driving directly to the craft store, I tempered my enthusiasm and shopped my stash.  As is often the case with stash-busting projects, I will need to buy just a few balls of supplemental yarn to round it out, but it has been BIG FUN doing this.  It feels great to crochet Twinkie Chan patterns!

After the afghan is done, I'll do the Cherry Zipper Pulls, followed by the Cherry Pie Seat Cushion & the Carnival Pen Covers to jazz up my office space!  Since a lot of Twinkie's projects use colorwork or don't require much yarn, they are a great way to use up oddments. You can browse all the patterns in the book on Ravelry.

The best way to experience this book is in person, so please enter to win not only here on CGOA Now, but also on Art, Like Bread and Crochet Spot.

I am running each giveaway until May 30 so that there is plenty of time to enter. To enter here, please use the giveaway widget. To enter elsewhere, visit the blog, search "Twinkie Chan" and follow instructions on the correct post.

If you want to get started crocheting your fun foodstuffs now and simply can not wait, just visit Twinkie's website for any of her scrumptious free patterns. Other Twinkie linkies are: Her active Ravelry group, her blog, her YouTube channel, and her clothing line.

To enter the giveaway, please use the Rafflecopter widget above.

This crochet is full of flavor, so let's keep the conversation going.  Have you ever crocheted food-themed items?  Which patterns make your mouth water?  Please leave a comment here on the blog, and let's connect on social media!  I can be found on facebooktwitterPinterestInstagramTumblrGoogle+,  and YouTube.  Join my monthly newsletter about crafts, crochet, and education.

Book Review - Mandalas to Crochet

Title: Mandalas to Crochet - 30 Great Patterns
Author: Haafner Linssen
MSRP: $21.99 USD

Book review by Pia Thadani - Stitches'N'Scraps

Mandalas have been really popular recently, and this book has some gorgeous ones! From easy, solid circles to intricate, lacy designs, there's something here for everyone.

Book Review - Mandalas to Crochet - Cover

The book starts out with a full 25 pages of detailed, valuable, introductory information. It includes an introduction by the author, some interesting background on the history of mandalas, and tips on selecting yarns and colors. There are also instructions on reading the charts, some great technique hints, and diagrams/tutorials of all the basic stitches.

Next is the mandala selector section, with pictures of all the mandalas in the book. The one called "Confetti Time," which is made up of lots of little circles, is my favorite. It's so unique!

Each mandala pattern includes written instructions and a large, easy to read chart. I love charted instructions because you can really see how the stitches come together. The last section of the book contains several beautiful patterns created with these mandala designs. There's a bag, a scarf, a rug, a blanket, and more!

I know you'll love this book as much as I do, so I'm excited to tell you that you can win your own free copy! This prize is generously provided by the publisher, St Martin's Griffin. To be eligible, you must be 18 years of age or older, with a valid, US or Canada shipping address. The winner will be contacted by email, and must reply to that email and provide the shipping address within 1 week in order to receive the prize. If the winner does not reply within 1 week, a new winner will be selected.

The giveaway ends on April 29th, 2016 (at 11:59pm, central time). Hurry and enter below!

Book Review: Happy-Gurumi: 20 Super Cute Amigurumi Toys to Crochet

Wednesday, January 20, 2016

Title: Happy-Gurumi: 20 Super Cute Amigurumi Toys to Crochet
Author: Vanessa Chan

Book Review by Marie Segares, UndergroundCrafter

Happy-Gurumi is a collection of amigurumi patterns by Vanessa Chan from The Pudgy Rabbit, who studied animation in college and made stop-motion puppets before picking up the crochet hook.

The book features 20 patterns, including 1 beginner, 11 easy, and 8 intermediate patterns for 13 creatures and 7 other (mostly food and balloon) projects. The brightly colored projects are photographed over vibrant backgrounds, making this book a real treat for the eyes.

Each pattern includes an introduction, a skill level, and a materials list, along with several pictures, many of which include pun-filled comic book style caption bubbles. Quite a few of the patterns are embellished with felt, and there are diagrams at the bottom of the relevant patterns that the crocheter can trace and use to cut the felt. (There is a link at the beginning of the book to help with printer configuration for ebook readers as well.)

After the patterns, there is a Crochet Basics section that includes conversationally written information about yarn and other materials, and illustrated tutorials for basic stitches, crocheting in the round, and assembly. The book ends with a list of abbreviations and an author bio.

The visual presentation is whimsical and fun. The patterns seemed to be geared more towards an experienced amigurumi crocheter and, as such, there are more detailed assembly requirements than most beginner-oriented amigurumi pattern books. You can see all of the designs from the book on the Ravelry source page here. As with most pattern books, you will enjoy it more if you like the patterns! This book would be ideal for a crocheter with a firm grasp on crochet basics that wants to take her/his amigurumi up a notch by working on projects with more details and embellishments.

Full disclosure: A free electronic review copy of Happy-Gurumi was provided by Martingale. Although I accept free products for review, I do not accept additional compensation, nor do I guarantee a positive review.  My reviews are based entirely on my honest opinions.

Book Review: Boho Crochet: 30 Hip and Happy Projects

Tuesday, December 8, 2015

Title: Boho Crochet: 30 Hip and Happy Projects
Contributing Editor: Marinke Slump

Book Review by Marie Segares, UndergroundCrafter

Boho Crochet is a collection of 30 crochet patterns by 10 popular crochet designers (including Etsy shop owners and bloggers) from the Netherlands, the UK, Ireland, and the US. These designers are known for their embrace of bohemian-style projects influenced by 1960s and 1970s crochet as well as their use of vibrant, contemporary colors.

The book opens with an introduction from Marinke Slump, who brought the collection together, and bios of each of the 10 contributing designers. Next, there is a Project Selector, which is a graphic table of contents with a thumbnail of each pattern along with the pattern name and designer name. (This is the only place in the book where the designer name is linked to the pattern.)

The first section, Crochet for the Home, includes 19 patterns for blankets, pillows, and decorations, including 4 “one star” (beginner) patterns, 11 “two star” (intermediate) patterns, 3 “three star” (accomplished) patterns, and 1 “four star” (advanced) pattern.

The next section, Crochet Fashion, includes 2 “one star” patterns, 8 “two star” patterns, and 2 “three star” patterns for women’s accessories such as neckwear, a shawl, a hat, fingerless mitts, and bags.

Each pattern page includes an introduction, a pattern skill rating, and a supply list that lists the yarn by weight and fiber type, but not brand. About half the patterns indicate gauge is not important. Most patterns include several full color pictures.

The final section is Crochet Techniques. Tools and Materials shares some general tips about yarn, hooks, and notions. Getting Started includes multi-step photo tutorials of basic stitches and techniques. There are also photo tutorials for increasing, decreasing, crocheting in the round, changing colors, joining and seaming, and finishing, and a written explanation of common pattern reading challenges. The book ends with a listing of the yarns used in each project and an index.

The bright colors and inviting pictures are definitely inspiring, and the detailed tutorials in the back make this book ideal for an adventurous beginner crocheter who is hoping to take their skills to the next level. All of the patterns have been previously published, and quite a few are available for free online. The book has also been “translated” from a UK version, and all of the patterns use US crochet abbreviations. However, some of the formatting has not made the transition, so US crocheters who are accustomed to reading patterns from traditional publishers will need to adjust to the lack of spacing (e.g., ch55 instead of ch 55).

The book is beautifully presented and would make a wonderful gift. Crocheters who spend a lot of time online may have already accessed some of these designs for free or by purchasing them on Etsy or Ravelry, but others would view the book with fresh eyes. As with any pattern book, your enjoyment will be increased if you love the patterns. Unfortunately, there is no Ravelry source page set up for the book, but you can see several photographs on the official Martingale page for the book here.

Full disclosure: A free electronic review copy of Boho Crochet was provided by Martingale. Although I accept free products for review, I do not accept additional compensation, nor do I guarantee a positive review.  My reviews are based entirely on my honest opinions.
