Reason to Join a Local CGOA Chapter #1: Local NatCroMo Events!

Post by Stacy Vaka of Crochet Kitten.

Welcome to my blog series on reasons to join a local CGOA chapter! Back in January I joined the Crochet Guild of Prince William County for the first time, and I couldn't believe what I had been missing!

As you know, March is National Crochet Month. Prior to my joining the Prince William CGOA, what this meant to me was a heavy dose of blog tours, online sales, and charity drives. This is the first time I've ever had a physical event to go to for NatCroMo, so my first reason to join a local chapter is:

The opportunity to take part in local events for National Crochet Month!

In addition to setting up crochet display cases at the local library, my local chapter set up a large booth at the local mall to entice passersby to learn about crochet.

Guild members Rhonda Reese and Lauren Capehart greet curious shoppers.
Members worked on personal projects to demonstrate the crochet process, but for those passersby interested in learning to crochet, there were plenty of supplies to go around.

A popular project to teach new crocheters were beaded bracelets, as they were easy enough for beginners to do and fast enough to be completed in a short session.

Those members who did not have an interest in teaching had the opportunity to show off their best work instead.

The zebra afghan was done by a guild member known for her afghans, who wished to remain anonymous.
Teddy bear by Rhonda Reese.

And as always, every time I think I've seen everything there is to do in crochet, I always find something new I want to try, and in fact, I found two new things I want to try at this event: spiral crochet and Tunisian strawberry stitch.

Spiral square and Tunisian strawberry apron were also done by Rhonda Reese.

It's funny how I went to this event thinking I would teach someone a thing or two about crochet and ended up learning some things myself. But the best part was having people to talk to who understand the crochet references I make in conversation. I've only ever experienced that online before, so it was a new experience to have that in real life. I'm already looking forward to next month's meeting.
